Eaten with sour cream and chunks of tomato on top, this is a winner of a dish. But the seafood bisque was thickened overmuch.Īmong the appetizers, quesadillas are excellent, with wheat-flour tortillas despite their thinness and a cheese filling sparked with a generous sprinkle of crumbled bacon. The creamed vegatable soups seem to be top-notch - we had a wonderful cream of spinach, flavorful and without added thickeners. At Tanglewood's it's crucial, because there is a remarkable variation in quality among the dishes. It's important at most restaurants to know what to order. (For a little extra intimacy, ask for the small area way in the back.) This is a big restaurant, yet it's made to appear intimate with the use of room dividers and split-level floor design. It's an uncommonly pretty place, cheery and yet softly lit, with widely spaced tables and lots of light, natural wood.Īdd comfortable chairs, a pretty bar, attractive prints on the walls, green plants and excellent acoustics (you can converse quietly even when it's crowded), and you have a delightful environment for eating and relaxing. The menu is typical light-chic: salads, a souffle, a pasta, mesquite-grilled burgers, stir-fried vegetables. The setting is lovely, the prices are moderate, and if the food isn't terrific, most of it is pleasant enough. In such a case, Tanglewood's isn't a bad choice. You're in the mood for something a little more tranquil and civilized than the cafeteria-style offerings of the Eatery, but you don't necessarily want the full meal, the prices or formality of a big-dinner restuarant. You're shopping or waiting to see a movie at the White Flint mall and it's time to eat. Cards: American Express, Diners Card, Master Charge, Visa. Special to The Washington Post January 31, 1985

On March 11, 1979, Williams, a member of the Westside Crips, was arrested for four murders and on August 9, 1979, Washington was gunned down. They were heavily involved in the production of PCP, marijuana and amphetamines. īy 1978, there were 45 Crip gangs, called sets, in Los Angeles. The color then became associated with Crips. A blue bandana was worn in tribute to Morrow after he was shot and killed on February 23, 1973. Williams recalled that a blue bandana was first worn by Crips founding member Curtis "Buddha" Morrow, as a part of his color-coordinated clothing of blue Levis, a blue shirt, and dark blue suspenders. In his memoir, Williams also refuted claims that the group was a spin-off of the Black Panther Party or formed for a community agenda, writing that it "depicted a fighting alliance against street gangs-nothing more, nothing less." Washington, who attended Fremont High School, was the leader of the East Side Crips, and Williams, who attended Washington High School, led the West Side Crips. Williams however appears to discount the sometimes-cited founding date of 1969 in his memoir, Blue Rage, Black Redemption. Stanley Tookie Williams met Raymond Lee Washington in 1969, and the two decided to unite their local gang members from the west and east sides of South Central Los Angeles in order to battle neighboring street gangs. Gang activity in South Central Los Angeles has its roots in a variety of factors dating to the 1950s, including: post- World War II economic decline leading to joblessness and poverty racial segregation of young African American men, who were excluded from organizations such as the Boy Scouts, leading to the formation of black "street clubs" and the waning of black nationalist organizations such as the Black Panther Party and the Black Power Movement. Main article: Debate over the origins of the Crips gang Richard Valdemar has heard allegations that "Crip" was an acronym for " Communist Revolution In Progress", though he considers this unlikely to be true. According to the film Bastards of the Party, directed by a member of the Bloods, the name represented "Community Revolutionary Interparty Service" or "Community Reform Interparty Service". The name had no political, organizational, cryptic, or acronymic meaning, though some have suggested it stands for "Common Revolution In Progress", a backronym. Īnother source suggests "Crips" may have evolved from "Cripplers", a 1970s street gang in Watts, of which Washington was a member. In February 1972 the Los Angeles Times used the term. People in the neighborhood then began calling them cripples, or "Crips" for short. The name evolved into "Crips" when gang members began carrying around canes to display their " pimp" status. Cribs was chosen to reflect the young age of the majority of the gang members. Some sources suggest that the original name for the alliance, "Cribs", was narrowed down from a list of many options and chosen unanimously from three final choices, over the Black Overlords and the Assassins. Some self-identified Crips have been convicted of federal racketeering. They have a long and bitter rivalry with the Bloods. With an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 members in 2008, the gangs' members have been involved in murders, robberies and drug dealing, among other crimes. The Crips are one of the largest and most violent associations of street gangs in the United States. Traditionally, since around 1973, its members have worn blue clothing. Founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1969, mainly by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams, the Crips were initially a single alliance between two autonomous gangs it is now a loosely-connected network of individual "sets", often engaged in open warfare with one another. The Crips are an alliance of street gangs that is based in the coastal regions of Southern California. Recipient's name and unit: Impressed upon the medal’s rim in block Roman capitals.Ĭlasp (if awarded): Ornate bar with fish-tail ends, supported at either end by a rosette. Obverse design (by William Wyon): The diademed head of Queen Victoria is depicted featuring the text ‘VICTORIA REGINA’. The majority of the Indian Mutiny Medals and clasps are made of solid silver, although some bronze versions were issued to mainly Indian non-combatants. Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58 - PICTURE: Royal Museums Greenwich THE INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL DESIGN AND FEATURES It was the last campaign medal issued by the Honourable East India Company and the 1868 order is believed to account for the large number of medals found to this day without bars. The awarding of Indian Mutiny Medals was approved by General Order number 363 on 18th August 1858 and number 733 of 1859 and initially was only to be awarded to troops who served in operations against the mutineers.īut the General Order number 771 of 1868 extended the award to anyone who’d borne arms or been under fire – including members of the Indian judiciary and the Indian civil service, who also became embroiled in the fighting. The mutiny is also referred to as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Sepoy Mutiny and the Revolt of 1857. Having first started in the town of Meerut, The Indian Mutiny quickly erupted into other rebellions by citizens in the areas of the upper Gangetic plain and central India. The Indian Mutiny Medal (1857-1858) was a campaign medal issued by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to officers and men serving in British and Indian units during operations to suppress the Indian Mutiny, which began on. For an additional 6 dollars, we fill out a warranty card that entitles you to a free new battery if your Delco battery fails within 5 years for Professional Silver batteries or 6 or 7 years for Professional Gold batteries (depending on model). This is administered through the local Delco wholesaler, but it offers free replacement for battery failure anytime during the rating period. The shop I ran, and also the one where I work now, offer an extended warranty coverage on Delco batteries. The free replacement period was just one selling point that made the Delco battery a better choice. Interstate finally took their stock out because I wouldn’t sell their batteries, but even then Interstate had a simple pro-rata warranty when Delco had a free replacement period AND a pro-rata warranty. Way back when, when I was the manager of the shop I eventually took over, we carried both Interstate and Delco batteries. A warranty replacement battery would cost you more than simply buying a new one. I would have sold that same battery new for $99.95. The problem is I never sold Delco batteries at their published retail. So if that battery fails at 62 months you get a new one for 62X1.72=$106.64. For example, if an AC Delco battery has a published retail price of $124.00 with a 6 year warranty, you pay $1.72 for every month of use. The pro rate charge is simply the retail price divided by the months in service. You’re better off just buying a new one than using warranty to replace it. The problem with prorating a warranty is that as you approach the end of the warranty period, the pro-rated charge for replacement is often more than the cost of simply buying one outright. Their batteries are now “rated” for 6 years with free replacement if it fails before 42 months, 5 years with 30 month replacement, etc. Best that I can recall Delco started this program about 5 years ago. If somebody else wants to go down that road, have at it. But I don’t do Walmart, and I’m not getting into that. Batteries sold at Costco are cheaper than most, with the possible exception of Everstart, sold by Walmart. I’m just waiting for somebody to say I should buy higher quality batteries But it saved me a lot of money, about $40 all told Sure, the pro-rated warranty may be slightly hard for some people to figure out, calculate, apply, etc. I would have paid the full price of a new battery. Then I looked at the label and determined it has 42 month free replacement period, and apparently NO pro-rated period at all.īy the standards of the Interstate battery, I would have been out of luck at 48 months. Costco no longer has their own brand batteries, as of a few years ago. So I headed to Costco and swapped the battery out for a fresh Interstate. By reading the label, I determined it was within the 50% pro-rated period. My Kirkland Signature battery had a “06/14” sticker, so it was clearly 4 years old. At this point, I know I need a fresh battery. As I was removing the cables, I realized the positive post was actually turning. a few days ago, I noticed that my positive post and cable was showing a lot of corrosion. I’m not sure about anybody else, but I’m sure some of you guys will chime in.Ī personal example. I know Costco no longer pro-rates their batteries, and I believe this also applies to AC Delco. When the free replacement warranty is up, there are no more calculations to perform, you buy a brand new battery outright. Supposedly, this was because it’s easier for everyone. Ī few years ago, I read that certain brands are no longer pro-rating their batteries. I know this has been going on for some time. Thus, Sam and Bucky agree to have each other's backs when Karli resurfaces. Sam accepts his apology and also gives him some advice for moving forward: "You gotta stop looking at other people to tell you who you are," which is true. "When Steve told me what he was planning, I don't think either of us really understood what it felt like for a Black man to be handed the shield," says Bucky. The first episode of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier has already established that the idea of what. Anyway, Bucky eventually makes his way to Louisiana, lightly flirts with Sarah to Sam's annoyance, and, more importantly, apologizes to Sam for initially putting the pressure on him to become Captain America. The key point is that Bucky is not only destined to die because of his parallel with Black Widow, but more with the overall MCU trope of killing heroes for dramatic impact, particularly when they have a narrative reason to sacrifice themselves. But before that decision, we get to spend some time with Sam and Sarah as they enlist their neighbors to help them fix up the family boat, which was the other part of the episode I loved because I started imagining a 22-episode broadcast network drama about Sam juggling the family's business in Louisiana with weekly superhero missions. Thus, Sam finally decides to become the next Captain America and starts training his butt off, a great and decisive moment for a character that's been fairly reactionary up until this point. Warning: SPOILERS For The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Episode 1 - 'New World Order'. Thankfully, it doesn't because the script successfully walks the fine line of pushing Sam toward his comic book-mandated destiny without disregarding Isaiah's point of view, because the episode understands it comes down to a matter of perspective and experience. Bucky doesnt have 10 numbers in his cell phone but if he did, these names would be Barnes most likely contacts in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Even if they did, no self-respecting Black man would ever want to be." That line, especially the last part, is really heavy and could disrupt the entire show, which is obviously about Sam picking up the Captain America mantle. They will never let a Black be Captain America. "But they've been doing that for 500 years," says Isaiah. In another heartbreaking performance from Carl Lumbly, Isaiah goes into even more detail about the horrible things the government did to him, including scrubbing his existence from history. Hopefully Tom Hiddleston’s irrepressible ability. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier failed Sam and Bucky. Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Baron Zemo, John Walker. This wasn’t the buddy action comedy they deserved but a slog through comic book trivia. Sam returns to the states and immediately takes Steve's shield to Isaiah Bradley, who refuses it because it doesn't mean anything to him. With Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Daniel Brhl, Emily VanCamp. only thing bucky barnes did this episode was beat walker to a pulp flirt with sarah the bisexual peace sign think about steve carry his little dog tags around flirt with sam and think about steve. Anyway, time to discuss my two favorite parts of the episode. It’s also somewhat map dependent, and that usually means that a civ will be placed in a lower rank. The Mongols are a unique civ that requires a specific approach to the game, so there is a greater learning curve than most civilizations in this game. Depending on the map, you will notice that they perform significantly better or worse. The problem of this civilization is the inconsistency in strengths and weaknesses. In addition, their Sofas have a four-second faster production time, making them a very aggressive civilization. Their scouts are also strong and can be used to harass the enemy’s economy. Their unique bonus for ships makes them a strong civilization on water maps. They are incredibly strong, especially in feudal all-ins. The Malian civilization is considered one of the best civilizations in the game. Sadly, it did lose a lot of the things that made this civilization so scary. It is not the giant it once was before the game was patched, but its playstyle hasn’t changed significantly. However, it does have its strengths, such as being playable on dry Arabia and Four Lakes, where it performs really well. The Holy Roman Empire is a solid choice, but not necessarily in the top tier of civilizations. If you do decide to play French, make sure to build at least two TCs to maximize your production and economic output. The French civilization has always been one of the weakest civilizations in the Age of Empires 4.Īlthough they have recently received an economic buff where their villagers produce faster, making them a little bit better, this is far from enough to make them good. They have many different ways to attack and adapt to the enemy, making them one of the most versatile civilizations in the game.Įven if the meta shifts to something else, there is a good chance this civilization can just be played in a different way and survive most changes. The English are very good on every map and very hard to defeat due to their strong defense. Its unique technologies, such as the Sacred Sidewinder and Compound Defender, make it an excellent choice for feudal aggression.ĭelhi’s biggest advantage, though, is its ability to counter English and Malians, two popular civilizations in the current meta. It excels in both hybrid and open maps, making it a versatile option for any situation. Delhiĭelhi is undoubtedly one of the strongest civilizations in the game. In the past, China’s strength was in 2TC into strong army compositions, but this style has fallen out of favor.Īs a result, China is a solid choice for players who prefer a more defensive or eco-focused playstyle but may struggle in aggressive games. However, China’s playstyle doesn’t quite fit with the current meta that favors aggression. Maps like Mountain Clearing, Four Lakes, French Pass, and Baltic are all great for China, while maps like Prairie may not be as ideal. ChinaĬhina is a civ that offers many good map options, making it a decent choice for players who like a versatile civ. It can be a good option for players who enjoy the eco or trade-focused playstyle, but it may struggle in the current meta that favors aggression. The Abbasid Dynasty is not necessarily a bad civ, but it’s not a standout choice either. However, they might struggle on maps like Prairie or Mountain Clearing. This civilization can be a solid choice in maps like Dry Arabia, Four Lakes, and Lepany being particularly good options. The Abbasid Dynasty has many different playstyles to choose from, and the strength of this civilization will depend greatly on how you decide to play with it. |
